Our Wedding

Our goal is to celebrate our two families - both blood and found - coming together. We know traveling for weddings can be a lot and we want people to not feel like traveling for the wedding is a chore, nor that they are stuck using a vacation day to not really get a vacation. We picked a summer wedding because we didn’t want people to have to fly out to Seattle in the rainy spring.

With that in mind, we’re trying to make sure that this is a fun experience for everyone. We’ve got some fun Seattle stuff planned for Friday where we’ll be renting out the local independent theater that we got engaged at to watch one of our favorite movies. We’re having dinner that night so folks can try some of our favorite foods in the area and get to meet each other.

For the wedding, we’re keeping the ceremony short so we can focus on having a fun party and we should have some things at the reception that we think are going to be fairly unique to us. We also will have shuttles so that folks don’t have to worry about getting to and from the hotel.

And while we know that some folks might extend their trip to enjoy the Seattle summer, a lot of folks will have to go home on Sunday we we wanted to have an easy brunch so that we could just spend some more time with folks that morning and make sure people are fed before they have to jet off, so we’re making sure we do brunch in a way that’s close by (probably at) the hotel so that no one has too hectic of a travel day.

All this to say that we know it’s a LOT for folks to travel here and we really want to make sure it’s as much of a vacation as possible. And if you’re local, we just hope it’s a really fun weekend!

*** Long story short, we got a discount and are further covering some of the room costs for Friday and Saturday so folks don’t need to shop around for hotels to find a good price since we’ve already done all that work for you. You also don’t need to worry about a car or uber because we got a hotel that’s right off the train. *** We recognize that a lot of folks have to travel and that can be pricey. We don’t want to put too much of a burden on anyone coming and celebrating with us. Because of that, we reserved a block of rooms at the Renaissance Seattle Hotel. We have locked in a discounted price for the rooms and our families are putting some money in to help reduce the price of a standard room to $200 a night. If interested, please contact the hotel and tell them you are booking for the Maruska/Sandler wedding. The hotel will be the hub of the weekend with events and transportation, so we hope everyone takes advantage of these rooms! (We also negotiated that upgrading a room is about $50/night instead of the standard $210/night, especially helpful for those traveling with kiddos.) There is some weirdness when you book because of the way we’re covering some of the room expenses. When you check out it will show $260 a night (or a bit more if you upgrade). You won’t actually be charged $260, though. The $60+tax a night credit will be added to Friday and Saturday night stays. For example, if you stay in the basic room those two nights, at checkout it will say $520+tax, but when you are actually charged at the end of your stay you will only be charged $400+tax. We tried to make this easier, but this is the only way we could get it to work. Your credit card will only be charged after check out in July. Please see the link below or call the hotel to book! COMING FROM THE AIRPORT When you fly into SeaTac Airport (we don’t recommend flying into any of the smaller ones in the area), you will be able to take the train right to the hotel. You will get on the light rail and take the north line, going towards Lynwood, and then get off at the Symphony stop. You’ll be just a few blocks from the hotel and that should save you a $50+ cab ride each way. The bus and train system in Seattle is also good enough that if you want to do city sightseeing you can just walk or bus or train around. And if you want to gamble with you life, feel free to use one of those electric scooters. You would only need to rent a car if you were planning on taking a trip to go hiking or something like that.

Summer in Seattle is the best! There are many amazing towns just a ferry ride away, nature outings (if that’s your thing), and weird things to see around our city. We are happy to give recs if you’re curious about a PNW vacation!

Things to Do

Registry

Traditionally when folks got married, the gifts people gave them were all the things they needed to start a new life together. Kate and I are still getting rid of all the doubles of those things we had from when we were living on our own! So a lot of the traditional wedding gifts that go on a registry are things we just don’t need. Additionally, we know that a lot of folks had to travel in order to come to the wedding and that cost a lot of money. We thought about ways we could reduce this, but no matter where we put the wedding, a lot of people were going to have to travel. All that to say, we’re both firm believers in the “if you have to travel for a wedding, showing up is the gift.” Because of all this, we don’t have a registry but we also know that some folks will still want to give us a gift and not having a registry can make it hard for people to pick what to give. Here’s some of our thoughts/guidance in that area: If you have a tradition that your family loves and you'd like to pass on to our new family, that’s a great gift! If you have some items that make your life much easier and you wanna give those to us, that’s great! We love things that save us time! If you want to give money, we appreciate it! You don’t have to give any, but we do know that some people like to do that at weddings so we should address it. Some wedding sites, like the one we use, charge fees to set up those “pay towards our honeymoon” type things and it seems silly to just give away 3% of the money to some random company. If you’re the type of person that wants to give money then we recommend a check or venmo (@Patrick-Marusksa or @SandlerK) are both good because we don’t have to give any of the money to a random company. And to be extra clear, if you don’t wanna give money you don’t have to! One thing that’s probably not a great gift for us is experiences. We’re using up all our vacation for the year on the wedding and a honeymoon and we won’t have any additional vacation time, so things that require us to take time off aren’t things we will be able to use for a while.
